JOYS AND CONCERNS

Charles Maryland Hunt, 92, grandfather of the Rev. C. Anthony Hunt, died May 12. Charles Bowers Sr., father of the Rev. Mary Ellen Glorioso, died May 11, after a long illness. The funeral service will be held Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m. Condolences may be sent to Mary Ellen at 5669 Mineral Hill Road, Sykesville, MD 21784.

Virginia Slifer, the mother-in-law to the Rev. Bill Herche of Mt. Zion UMC in Lothian, died last week. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 18, at 4 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro. Eliza Stackley Matthews, 91, the mother of Bishop Marcus Matthews, of the Eastern Pennsylvania and Peninsula-Delaware Conferences, died May 5. She was a lifelong member of Cumberland UMC in Florence, S.C., where a service of remembrance was held May 10. Condolences may be sent to the family at P.O. Box 820, Valley Forge, PA 19482.

OPPORTUNITIES AND EVENTS

NEW - Peace with Justice Sunday: This Sunday, May 18, is Peace with Justice Sunday, one of six United Methodist Special Sundays with offering. The offering is used to empower compassionate people to advocate for human rights, buy fair-trade products, care for the environment, demonstrate for important causes, eradicate poverty, feed the hungry, mediate conflict, provide health care, seek affordable housing and model nonviolence. Half of the offering funds global outreach through the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society. The other half remains with annual conferences for peace with justice ministries.

UPDATE on Annual Conference

  • Registration to the annual conference is closed and no more changes will be accepted. However, members have 72 hours before conference starts May 22 to cancel registration at the hotel.
  • Free health screening: All those attending the annual conference and participate in the HealthFlex wellness plan will have an opportunity to have a free health screening by Procheck. No appointment is needed. Those who are not covered by HealthFlex will pay $115 per person. The screening requires a minimum of eight hours of fasting for best results, but fasting is not mandatory. The health screenings will take place in Exhibit Hall C on the lower level.   • 25 years: The Board of Ordained Ministry will acknowledge the newest class of clergy who have completed 25 years of full time ordained ministry. A certification of celebration will be given out at the Executive Session Thursday, May 22. The 16 clergy being honored are the Revs. Kim Capps, Carmen Collette, Doug Hays, Esther Holiman, HeaSun Kim, Ann Laprade, Lloyd McCanna, Rod Miller, Mark Mooney, Constance Paulson, Randy Pumphrey, Sheldon Reese, Victor Sawyer, Gary Sheffield-James, David Wentz and John Yost.
  • Multi-ethnic celebration at Annual Conference: Nearly 700 people have tickets for the multi-ethnic dinner at this year's annual conference Friday, May 23. Please wear ethnic dress for this celebratory event. The celebration after dinner is free and open to all. There will be displays, exhibits, and hands on activities. Individual and group presentations include songs, dances and fashion shows. The celebration will take place in Exhibit Hall D. For more information, contact Edith C.   • URGENT - MFSA Breakfast: All who plan to attend the MFSA breakfast at Annual Conference must be registered. The absolute deadline to register is Monday, May 19, by noon. Even if you have meal plan tickets, you must register for the MFSA breakfast (Friday, May 23, at 7 a.m.), which will be held in Chesapeake D. Those who do not have meal plan tickets may purchase a ticket for $22, but must register to do so. Register by e-mailing ogross@bwcumc.org and send a copy to Rev.   • BMCR lunch - The BMCR luncheon Friday, May 23, with about 230 people expected, will be held in National Harbor Rooms 2-3.
  • New pictorial directory: Throughout annual conference, Olin Mills will be taking photos for the 2008 conference pictorial directory. Clergy and laity must schedule appointment at a marked sign-up table near the main registration. The studio is in Exhibit Hall C. Only one face per picture will be allowed, unlike previous years when couples appeared together.

NEW - School of Christian Mission: The 2008 Cooperative School of Christian Mission, sponsored by United Methodist Women and the Conference Board on Mission, will be held July 24-27, at the Hilton Inn in Gaithersburg. In addition to Bible study, led by Rev. Cynthia Belt, classes will include Israel/Palestine and Native Americans. Rev. Tony Love will lead worship and music. Register by June 10 for last year's prices. After that date, $25 will be added. Room charges vary according to number in room. Commuter rate is $205. UPDATE- Training for church secretaries and administrative assistants:
The Baltimore-Washington Conference is offering training for church secretaries and administrative assistants on use of the new Gateway system, Wednesday, June 18, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, at the Conference Center. This is an online system that will be used for charge conference and evaluations due this fall. Training is free, but registration is required. Retreat and Camping events

  • Summer camp for violence victims: The Baltimore-Washington Conference in partnership with Board of Child Care is organizing a summer camp for youth ages 8-18 and victims of families affected by the violence and homicides in Baltimore City. The camp is to provide the youth with a safe and wholesome environment for one week at West River, Camp Manidokan or Camp Harrison. "This camp experience will allow city children who have experienced great loss to have a week long experience of just plain fun and enjoy life," Bishop Schol said.
  • Volunteers for Camp Manidokan: Volunteers are needed at Camp Manidokan on a weekly basis to provide leadership and supervision to campers. There are openings throughout the summer for different age groups. For more information, contact Chris Schlieckert at 301-834-7244 or manidokan@gmail.com.

Youth Rally: Youth and their leaders are invited to a rally at Salem UMC, this Saturday, May 17, at 6 p.m., in Wolfsville. Dance drama, a special speaker and a youth band will be part of the worship. UPDATE - Baltimore County Christian work camp: The 25th annual work camp will be held July 20-23. It is an ecumenical volunteer program, founded and sponsored by United Methodists, that shares the love of Christ by improving the homes of families with low incomes and other assistance in Baltimore County.
